What is the ruling on using things made from animal hides?

The rulings on using hides made from animals vary depending on their type: 1. Hide of an animal whose meat is permissible to eat and was slaughtered according to Islamic law (dhabiha): It is pure by scholarly consensus, whether tanned or not. 2. Hide of an animal whose meat is permissible to eat but was not slaughtered according to Islamic law (carrion): It is impure and only becomes pure through tanning. Once tanned, it becomes pure.
