Is it permissible to use contraception due to low income, poor health, and the fear of increased burdens with many children?

It is not permissible to use contraceptives out of fear of poverty, for Allah is the Provider, and this resembles the actions of the people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). However, if contraception is used due to an illness of the mother, or harm that would befall her, or due to many children and closely spaced pregnancies such that their upbringing becomes difficult for her, then there is no harm in that, for the benefit of the children or the mother, and not out of ill-suspicion of Allah regarding provision.
