Is a wife sinful if she refuses to spend from her own money, which she earns from her business, on her husband's food, drink, and cigarettes, reasoning that this money is for her children's education and compensation, knowing that her husband cannot meet all their needs and spends more on himself than on his children?

The husband is obligated to provide for his wife and children in a reasonable manner. The wife is not obligated to spend from her own money unless she voluntarily does so with good grace. If the husband stipulates that his wife must give him a certain amount of her salary for him to permit her to work, the fatwa states that this condition is valid. If the wife's work is within her home and does not prevent her from fulfilling her husband's rights, he is not permitted to prevent her from it. There is no blame upon you for refusing to spend on the household from your money, and it is not permissible for you to give your husband money to buy cigarettes. The husband must repent to Allah, maintain his prayers, stop smoking, and strive to earn lawful income to provide for his family. Maintaining prayer is the key to all goodness and is a help in reforming oneself and overcoming hardships.
