What is the ruling regarding our bedridden mother's prayer when there is impurity on her clothes without her knowledge, and are we sinful if we do not inform her?
A person afflicted with سلس (urinary incontinence) must perform ablution (wudu') for each prayer after its time has begun, and then pray the obligatory (fard) prayer and as many supererogatory (nafl) prayers as they wish. They must take precautions by tying a cloth over the affected area to prevent the spread of impurity. If others are assisting her, they should perform ablution for her after the time for each prayer has begun, along with taking precautions. They are not required to inform her of her condition if they are fulfilling what absolves her responsibility. However, if she is performing ablution herself, she must be gently informed that it is obligatory for her to take precautions and perform ablution for each prayer after its time has begun. The Maliki school of thought offers significant ease by not requiring ablution for every prayer and by excusing the impurity for those afflicted with سلس. Avoiding impurity is a condition for the validity of prayer when one is aware and capable, but it is not a condition for reciting the Quran.
