Did the Prophet's praise of specific tribes aim solely to encourage their embrace of Islam, or were those characteristics already present in them, and does this apply to every individual among them?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) only praised tribes for their qualities of faith, goodness, and noble character. Thus, the preference of some tribes over others is based on their precedence in embracing Islam and their actions within it. This preference is not for every individual within these tribes, but rather for those among them who possess the qualities that warrant such preference, and it is generally understood as applying to the majority.

Quraysh was distinguished by the Imamate (leadership) being among them, and Banu Hashim were distinguished by the prohibition of receiving charity. However, this does not mean that lineage alone affects reward and punishment. Honor in the sight of Allah Almighty is attained through faith, righteous deeds, and piety, as Allah Almighty says: {Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.}

People are like mines; the best of them in the pre-Islamic era are the best of them in Islam if they understand the religion. Just as land that produces gold is better than land that produces silver, so too are lineages from which virtuous individuals emerge. However, this is a general preference. Believing and pious individuals from less distinguished lineages are better than those from distinguished lineages who are not their equal in faith and piety.

Allah does not prefer anyone based on their lineage over someone who is their equal in faith and piety, let alone over someone who has greater faith and piety. Therefore, distinction by lineage is a general distinction, based on presumption and cause. As for distinction by faith and piety, it is a specific, proven, and ultimate distinction. Whoever is more fearful of Allah is more honorable in the sight of Allah, and the reward from Allah is based on this.

The Qur'an did not praise anyone based on their lineage; rather, it praised people for their faith and deeds. External virtues are not considered by Allah unless they lead to an increase in internal virtues, for what truly matters is the heart.
