The question

What is the way to get rid of the feeling of psychological distress when a person is deprived of what he loves or seeks, such as losing the opportunity to marry a girl he considers righteous, despite believing in Allah’s divine decree and destiny and that "But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you"?

The answer

One must praise Allah for His decree, for Allah knows what is best for a person. What a person dislikes may be good for him, and what he likes may be bad for him, as stated in the Almighty's saying: "And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know." The entire affair of the believer is good: if he is afflicted with ease, he is grateful, and if he is afflicted with hardship, he is patient. Allah's withholding from the believer is a gift, and His trial is a wellness, for giving and blessings may lie in what a person dislikes. An example of this is the story of Umm Salamah, who was patient at the death of her husband, Abu Salamah, and said, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it with something better." So Allah replaced it for her with something better, and she married the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Therefore, be patient, trust in Allah's decree, and seek a woman of religious commitment and good character.
