What is the Shariah-compliant form of the Mushaf in light of modern technology, and are audio and video recordings of the Quran, laser-printed texts, and electronic devices containing the Quran treated with the same sanctity and reverence as the paper Mushaf? And will the lifting of the Quran be physical, by the disappearance of its verses from all receptacles preserving them?

Cassette tapes and laser discs containing the Holy Quran must be respected and preserved, for Allah Almighty says: "That [is so]. And whoever honors the sacred rites of Allah – it is better for him in the sight of his Lord." It is not permissible to degrade them or step on them. However, they do not entirely take the ruling of the Noble Mus'haf, so it is permissible for someone who is not in a state of ritual purity to touch them.

As for the lifting of the Quran at the end of time, Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud his saying: "Soon this Quran will be removed from you." He was asked: "How will it be removed from us when Allah has affirmed it in our hearts and we have affirmed it in our Mus'hafs?" He said: "It will be taken away in one night, removing what is in the hearts and taking away what is in the Mus'hafs, and people will wake up poor concerning it." Then he recited: "And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We have revealed to you. Then you would find for yourself against Us no guardian." The Quran will be lifted when no believer remains who acts upon it, and only the worst of people will remain, those who neither believe in the Quran nor act upon it, and upon them the Hour will be established.
