Will he who sincerely wished for martyrdom but did not attain it be granted the same graces as a martyr of war, such as intercession and being married to seventy-two of the wide-eyed houris?

Whoever strives in the path of Allah and hopes for martyrdom, or sincerely seeks to strive and earnestly asks Allah for martyrdom, will be granted the full reward of a martyr. As for whoever intends to strive but does not take the means to do so, he will only have the reward of his intention. The martyrdom of reward does not mean that a martyr in battle is equal to others in all virtues. The martyr killed in the path of Allah has special privileges, such as not being washed or prayed over, and six characteristics mentioned in the hadith, due to his sacrifice of his soul.
