What is the ruling on someone who rides with a person who plays songs, music, and drums, when he does not wish to hear it; should he remain silent or turn it off, or is it permissible for him to listen because he does not desire it?

If a person plays a tape of forbidden songs, those with him should advise him to change it and explain the Shari'ah ruling. If the one being advised does not respond and the adviser is unable to change the wrongdoing, and he has a need to ride with him or cannot leave him, then there is no blame upon him, provided that he turns away from hearing it with his heart. However, if he has no need to ride with him and is able to leave him, then he must leave him.
