Does a woman who has been irrevocably divorced a major divorce (baynunah kubra) observe the waiting period of a deceased person, and is she entitled to a share of the inheritance if her ex-husband dies after she receives the divorce paper and before her waiting period ends?

The jurists have agreed that if a man divorces his wife with a revocable divorce (talaq raj'i) and then dies while she is still in her waiting period ('iddah), her 'iddah changes from that of divorce to that of death (four months and ten days, unless she is pregnant), because she is considered, in essence, still his wife.

As for a woman who was irrevocably divorced (talaq ba'in) by her husband while he was in good health, and he then dies while she is in her 'iddah, her 'iddah does not change; rather, she completes the 'iddah of divorce and does not inherit, because the marital relationship has been severed.

However, if he divorced her irrevocably during his death-sickness (marad al-mawt) and then died while she was in her 'iddah, she observes the longer of the two 'iddahs and inherits from him.
