What should a wife do who hears insulting words from her husband, whose abusive language is increasing despite her repeated advice, and who does not excuse her for any unintentional mistake, and is it better for her to remain silent, and what advice can be given to the husband, so that Allah may guide his heart?
The marital relationship should be based on affection, mercy, understanding, and overlooking mistakes. If a husband mistreats and insults his wife, she should advise him and address any shortcomings on her part. If advice is ineffective, she may inform someone who can restrain him or take the matter to court. However, it is better for those who can, to be patient. The husband should fear Allah and treat his wife kindly, for good character is among the heaviest deeds placed on the scale, and through it, a servant can attain the rank of one who fasts and prays nightly. Islamic law encourages addressing people with kind words, and this is even more imperative with one's wife, in accordance with the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) sayings: “Treat women kindly,” and “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best to my family.”
