However, punishments are averted by doubts, such as the annulment of the punishment for adultery if the confession is retracted, or if virginity remains, or if one of the two adulterers claims marriage, or if there is an objection regarding the legality of the marriage or slave ownership in some cases. If the married woman who committed adultery names her partner and he does not confess, she becomes liable for the punishment of slander. The implementation of legal punishments is the prerogative of the Muslim ruler or his representative.
