What is the wisdom behind not mentioning the type of torment that befell those who disbelieved in the Table Spread (Al-Ma'idah)?

The exegetes differed regarding the descent of the table (al-Ma'idah) and the type of punishment inflicted upon those who disbelieved in it. Some said that it did descend, and this is the view of the majority. Others said that it did not descend, based on their statement: "We have no need for it" after Allah's warning of a severe punishment for whoever disbelieves after its descent.

As for the type of punishment, it was said to be transformation (maskh), and it was also said to be a unique punishment that no one else has ever been punished with, and it could be a worldly or an otherworldly punishment.

The exegetes did not mention any discourse regarding the wisdom behind the ambiguity of the punishment in the noble verse. However, among the purposes of ambiguity are magnification and glorification, so that minds may go to every possible interpretation of the ambiguous, as Ibn Ashour mentioned in other places in the Quran.
