The angels affirmed that their tidings were true from Allah Almighty, and their saying, "So do not be among the despairing," was a gentle warning lest the matter lead him to despair of Allah's mercy, and not an accusation of despair. Abraham responded by affirming, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those astray?" Despairing of Allah's mercy is considered one of the major sins, and it is not permissible for a believer to despair of Allah's mercy, even if he is advanced in age or his sins have multiplied. Rather, he must think good of Allah and supplicate to Him, being certain of a response.
