The question

Is it permissible in Islamic law to supplicate for the improvement of one's morals and qualities, to ask for the companionship of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the Highest Firdaws, to extinguish lust, to increase beauty, to ask for a spouse with specific characteristics, and to supplicate for a future husband, family, and children? What is the criterion for distinguishing between permissible and impermissible supplication? And what should I do to overcome my fear of overstepping boundaries in supplication?

The answer

Firstly, a Muslim should supplicate with comprehensive prayers that encompass the good of this world and the hereafter. The highest of these are those narrated in revelation, and one should avoid innovative, elaborate supplications. Transgression in supplication is asking Allah for forbidden things, or for things that Allah's established custom dictates He does not do, such as asking for immortality until the Day of Judgment, or for the removal of human necessities, or for knowledge of the unseen, or for infallibility, or for the gift of a child without a spouse.

Praying for the improvement of one's character is permissible, but praying for the beauty of one's appearance and the improvement of one's physical creation is an act of transgression.

A Muslim's supplication to be like the Prophets in terms of good qualities and religiousness, or to make people avert their gazes from him (meaning no one looks at him), is considered transgression in supplication.

Permissible supplications include: to be among Allah's chosen ones and His special servants, and among the righteous saints alongside the noble, dutiful guardian angels, and with the Prophet, peace be upon him, in the highest Paradise; to be aided in memorizing His Noble Book; to have one's desires extinguished and only allow what pleases Him through lawful means; to be protected from the evil of one's self and Satan and shielded from sin; and not to be counted among the transgressors.

It is permissible to pray to marry a spouse with specific qualities, to be a good father, and not to marry another. There is no objection to a mother praying for her daughter that among the suitors, only her destined one comes to her.

It is permissible for an unmarried woman to pray for her future husband, his family, and her future children.

It is advisable to condition supplications for the realization of dreams and travel upon Allah's knowledge that there is good in them.
