Does the Almighty’s saying, "O Zechariah, indeed We give you tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not appointed for him before any namesake," mean that God Almighty is the one who named the Prophet John, peace be upon him, and are there any other humans besides him whom God named?

Scholars have differed on the reason for naming Yahya (John) - peace be upon him - with this name. It was said: because Allah brought him to life with faith, or because he would die as a martyr, or because he brought guidance to people.

As for the interpretation of Allah's Almighty saying: ﴿We have not made for him before [anyone] of a similar name﴾ (Maryam: 7), there are differing opinions regarding it, including: 1. No barren woman had ever given birth to one like him. 2. That no one before him resembled him in infallibility or in matters related to women. 3. That no one before him was named with this name, and this is the most probable opinion, chosen by Al-Tabari. This indicates that Allah Almighty Himself undertook his naming, which was a distinction for him, as his naming was not entrusted to his parents. This grants him an advantage in the strength of defining the named due to the scarcity of shared names.
