Must a traveler who intended to stay two months in a certain country re-perform the prayers that he combined and shortened during that period after learning that he is not permitted to combine them?
The majority of scholars hold that whoever intends to stay in a country for more than four days loses the ruling of a traveler. Therefore, whoever shortens the prayer while being a resident must repeat it. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, however, was of the opinion that a traveler may shorten the prayer as long as he has not made an absolute intention to reside, and this is the view preferred by Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen. According to this view, there is no need for him to make up the prayer, but we advise him to make it up to avoid the scholarly اختلاف (disagreement).
