When is the supplication for returning from a journey said?

The Sunnah regarding the traveler's supplication is to say, at the beginning of the journey: "Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it ourselves, and surely to our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and deeds that please You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion in the journey and the Successor over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the sorrows of sight, and the evil return concerning wealth and family." And upon returning from it, the same supplication is said, with the addition: "Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord."

It is also Sunnah, upon returning from a journey (whether for war, Hajj, or Umrah), to say "Allahu Akbar" three times at every high point of the land, then to say: "There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things competent. Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord. Allah fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." He continues to repeat this remembrance until he enters the city.
