Is the Hadith, "Neither My heavens nor My earth can contain Me, but the heart of My believing servant can contain Me," authentic?
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah clarifies that many circulated narrations and hadiths have no basis from the Prophet (peace be upon him), or are weak and fabricated by consensus of the hadith scholars. These include: "My heavens and My earth did not encompass Me, but the heart of My believing servant encompassed Me," "The heart is the house of the Lord," "I was a hidden treasure and I loved to be known, so I created creation and made Myself known to them, and through Me they knew Me," and "Indeed, Allah created the intellect, and said to it: 'Come forward,' so it came forward..." Furthermore, some of these are known to be from the Companions and not from the Prophet, and some are false and contradictory to the Qur'an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.
Among the weak and fabricated hadiths are also: "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate," the saying that "the poor will be seated on the Day of Resurrection...", "Poverty is my pride," "O Allah, You have taken me out of the most beloved places to me, so settle me in the most beloved places to You," and "Whoever visits me and visits my father Ibrahim in one year will enter Paradise."
There are other baseless narrations such as the story of the Bedouin with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), or the story of Umar with his father, or "the one who divorces his wife for a bed of fire," or "do not dislike trials, for in them is the harvesting of hypocrites," and "whoever teaches his brother a verse from the Book of Allah owns him."
He emphasizes that the hadith "I looked at the sins of my Ummah and did not find a greater sin than one who learns a verse then forgets it" is authentic, and that "whoever is asked about knowledge he possesses and conceals it, Allah will bridle him on the Day of Resurrection with a bridle of fire" is also authentic.
In conclusion, he explains that the hadith "The most rightful thing for which you take a wage is the Book of Allah" is authentic in the context of Ruqyah (exorcism) and not recitation, and that the hadith "Whoever wrongs a dhimmi (non-Muslim under Muslim rule) will have Allah as his opponent" is weak, and that "whoever lights a lamp in a mosque, the angels and the bearers of the Throne will not cease to seek forgiveness for him" has no basis.
