What is the ruling on someone who was disobedient to Allah, then repented, and after years remembered a sin, which is that when he used to watch Christian TV series, he would be affected by their way of prayer and admire and imitate it, but he would not say what they say of blasphemies, rather he would say: "O Allah, forgive me" and so on, and he knew that they were upon falsehood? And another time he would imitate them because he wanted to know how they feel when they close their eyes, and he would imitate them in wearing nuns' habits? And what is the ruling on his past prayers when he was unaware of this sin?
The person afflicted with misgivings (waswās) should ignore them and pay them no mind, for one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. He should turn to the worship of his Lord, increasing in expiating good deeds. He must also have a good opinion of Allah, for Allah is Forgiving and Merciful; He forgives sins no matter how great they are.
