What is the authenticity of the hadith, "If you adorn your mosques and embellish your Qur'ans, then destruction is upon you," given the presence of ornamentation in mosques and Qur'ans?

Many scholars disliked the adornment of mosques, fearing it might distract worshippers and lead to imitation of disbelievers. They cited the hadith: "I was not commanded to erect lofty mosques," and Umar's saying: "Shelter the people from the rain, but beware of making it red or yellow, for that would be a trial for the people." Some even considered the adornment by al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik a disliked innovation (bid'ah makroohah). Some Shafi'is, however, deemed it sunnah, while others held that a mosque should not be inferior to the houses in the neighborhood. As for the forbidden adornment of Qur'ans, the majority opinion is that it refers to adorning them with gold, though some permitted it for women. The adornment of the Qur'an's cover is not what is intended in the hadith. It must be noted that the Sacred Law is the principle, and reality follows it.
