What is the authenticity of the saying: "This world is a marketplace; some have profited therein, while others have lost"?

This phrase is not a prophetic Hadith. Rather, it is a wisdom intended to remind people of the reality of this worldly life and that it is a cultivation ground for the Hereafter. The fortunate one is he who understands its true nature and acts within it in a way that brings him gain, not loss. Similar statements have been reported from the Salaf (pious predecessors) that affirm this meaning, such as the saying of Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi to 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz: "Indeed, this world is but one of the markets." And the saying of Shaykh Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti that one's lifespan and the duration of life are a definitive proof against a person, citing the verse: (Did We not grant you a long enough life for whoever would remember therein to remember, and did the warner not come to you?) The Qur'an and Sunnah indicate that this world is like a market where a person either profits through his righteous deeds or loses. As for what is attributed to some imams of the Ahl al-Bayt under the title "He (peace be upon him) said: The world is a market in which some people profited and others lost," it refers to some of their imams, not the Prophet (peace be upon him). Caution must be exercised with their narrations, which are often without chain of transmission or authentication.
