To what extent is the hadith authentic, and what is its interpretation: "Indeed, I know a people who beat their chests with a beating that the inhabitants of Hellfire can hear, and they are the backbiters (al-hammazūn), the slanderers (al-lammazūn), who seek out the faults of Muslims, uncover their secrets, and spread among them indecencies that are not in them"?

This hadith was narrated by Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Hayyan in his book "At-Tawbeekh wat-Tanbeeh" with a very weak isnad (chain of narration). Among what was mentioned in it is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, I know a people who beat their chests with a beating that the inhabitants of Hellfire hear." They are "the hammaazoon (slanderers) and lammaazoon (backbiters)." The hammaazoon are "those who seek out the faults of Muslims, expose them, and spread abominations about them that are not in them."

The كتاب (editor/researcher) of the book mentioned that its isnad is very weak due to the presence of Abu Bakr Al-Hudhali, of whom Al-Hafiz said he is matrook al-hadith (abandoned in hadith narration), An-Nasa'i said: "He is not trustworthy," and Ibn Al-Madini said: "Very weak." Al-Dhahabi and Abu Zur'ah also deemed him weak. Furthermore, Khalid Ar-Rab'i was deemed weak by Ibn Ma'in.

Therefore, no ruling or information can be established based on this hadith due to its extreme weakness, even though its wording is clear. The "hammaaz" is the one who backbites people or mentions them to their faces, and the "lammaaz" is the one who mentions them in their absence. And "they spread abominations about them that are not in them" means they disseminate and publicize falsehoods about them of which they are innocent.
