What is the ruling of the Sharia concerning a man who abandons his wife at night to sit with his mother until he sleeps, and refuses to let her go to her family?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A man's eagerness to honor his mother is a good thing, but he must not neglect to treat his wife kindly, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). If the wife perceives a shortcoming from her husband, there should be understanding and advice between them, and they should work to ward off Satan who seeks to separate them, in accordance with the verse: "Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy," and the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Indeed, Iblis places his throne upon water; he then dispatches his detachments... Then one of them comes and says, 'I did not leave him until I separated him from his wife' - he (the Prophet) said - 'So he draws him near to him and says, "You are excellent!"'" And among good companionship is for a man to allow his wife to visit her family, for it fosters kinship ties and strengthens affection.
