What is the ruling regarding a husband who abandons his wife for more than two weeks, refrains from speaking to her, engaging in intimacy, or showing compassion, and punishes her for not visiting his family who harmed her, and refuses to turn over a new leaf, and masturbates in the bathroom, while she has not withheld herself from him, and he refuses to eat her cooking or sleep in her bed? And what should the wife do in this situation? And is she sinful or is there any prohibition upon her?

A man is not permitted to abandon his wife unless she disobeys and rebels (nushūz), and this must be in a manner that conforms to Islamic law, not personal whim. He is obligated to treat her kindly. The wife should discuss matters with her husband amiably or involve wise individuals. Interaction between in-laws should be with kindness, and maintaining ties with them is Islamically desirable. Reconciling people is among the best acts of drawing closer to Allah. The wife does not sin by keeping her distance from her husband's family if they harm her, and the husband sins by abandoning his wife without a valid legal reason. The wife does not become unlawful to her husband due to these actions.
