Is the understanding and belief that the Qur'an is the uncreated, ancient speech of Allah, and is an attribute of His essence, and that He has never ceased to be a speaker, sound? And does this belief safeguard one from disbelief (kufr) and innovation (bid'ah)?

This question stems from obsessive whisperings (waswasah) that corrupt thought and disturb life. The topic of this question has been answered repeatedly. It is sufficient for the questioner to refer to previous fatwas, such as Fatwa No. 161335, and Fatwa No. 61657, which clarified that the Speech of Allah is ancient in kind but originated in individual instances. Also, Fatwa No. 105602, which drew attention to the fact that describing the Speech of Allah as ancient means it is uncreated, and that "ancient" refers to the general category of speech, not its individual instances. The fear of disbelief (kufr) and innovation (bid'ah) is commendable, as long as it does not exceed moderation and thus harm its possessor. If the questioner finds himself weak and affected by waswasah, he should content himself with a general understanding of this issue and believe what the Companions and the Salaf believed: that the Qur'an is the uncreated Speech of Allah Almighty, and that He, glory be to Him, speaks what He wills, when He wills. Then, he should turn to benefiting from the Qur'an through contemplation, action, and دعوت.
