Is it the expiation for an oath to fast three days before acting upon it, and to feed the poor after acting upon it? And is it permissible to give money to a charity?

The expiation for an oath is detailed in the Almighty’s saying: {Its expiation is the feeding of ten poor persons from the average of what you feed your own families, or clothing them, or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [each of these] – then a fast of three days.}

So, one who is able is given the choice between feeding, clothing, or freeing a slave. And whoever cannot find any of these should fast for three days. One is considered unable to find if he does not have a surplus beyond what suffices him and his dependents for their food for the day and night to offer as expiation.

If oaths are repeated concerning one thing with the intention of emphasis, then a single expiation suffices. However, if the oaths are about different things, or about one thing with the intention of establishing and renewing, not emphasizing, then each oath requires an expiation.

It is permissible to give the expiation to trustworthy charitable organizations that disburse it according to its legitimate channels.
