Is it permissible for my wife, who broke her fast in Ramadan due to breastfeeding, fearing for her child, to pay the expiation all at once after Ramadan? Is it permissible to pay it in money? What is the monetary value of the expiation for one day in Egypt? Is she required to make up the fasts (qada’)? And when should she make them up if breastfeeding continues?

If a breastfeeding woman fears for her own health, she is permitted to break her fast and only needs to make up the missed days. However, if she fears for her child, she must make up the missed days and feed a poor person for each day. If she is unable to make up the fasts until the next Ramadan arrives, there is no sin upon her, and the obligation to make up the fasts remains her responsibility. But if she was able to make up the fasts and delayed doing so until the next Ramadan began, then in addition to making up the fasts, she must pay a fidyah (expiatory payment) for each day. The amount of the fidyah is 750 grams of the staple food of the country for each day, and it is permissible to pay it in cash if that is more beneficial for the poor.
