Is a person expelled from Islam for slandering a chaste woman, and will his good deeds be accepted after his repentance, and what should he do if informing the slandered woman and her husband of the incident would lead to discord?

Repentance is obligatory for whoever commits the grave sin of slander, which is one of the major sins. Whoever slanders a chaste woman must have a good opinion of Allah, for Allah forgives all sins for whoever repents. Slander does not expel its perpetrator from the fold of Islam; rather, Allah has opened the door of repentance for the slanderer after clarifying the gravity of slandering chaste women. Despairing of Allah's mercy is not permissible.
