Why do people love themselves?

A person's love for himself is an innate disposition, essential for the preservation of life, and it is one of the five necessities agreed upon. This love is only blameworthy if the love of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) surpasses it, for the love of Allah and His Messenger is a more intense love. The ascendancy of the love of Allah and His Messenger regulates human behavior, frees one from selfishness and egocentrism, and makes one give and withhold for the sake of Allah, prioritizing the Hereafter over this worldly life. However, if self-love predominates, one will transgress the Sacred Law, neglect the rights of creation, and prioritize this worldly life over the Hereafter. So, the servant fluctuates between these two loves, and whoever allows the love of this world and transgression to dominate, his abode is Hell. But as for him who feared the station of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] desire, his abode will be Paradise.
