Does the torment of the grave continue for the one who was negligent in sin, and can it be alleviated by charity or Hajj on their behalf?

Punishment in the grave is of two types:

1. Permanent punishment: This continues until the Day of Resurrection, and evidence for this is Allah’s saying: ﴿The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening﴾ [Ghafir: 46], and some hadiths that indicate the continuity of the punishment, such as the hadith of Samurah regarding the Prophet’s (PBUH) vision, the story of the two green branches, the hadith of Al-Rabee’ ibn Anas from Abu Al-Aliyah from Abu Hurayrah concerning those whose heads are crushed with rocks, the story of the one swallowed by the earth, and the hadith of Al-Bara’ ibn Azib concerning the disbeliever.

2. Temporary punishment: This ceases after a period and is specific to some disobedient individuals whose sins were lighter. The punishment may cease for them due to a supplication, charity, seeking forgiveness, or the reward of Hajj reaching them.
