Is there a circumambulation of arrival (tawaf al-qudum) and a farewell circumambulation (tawaf al-wada') incumbent upon the individual performing Hajj al-Ifrad who resides in Al-Sharai' in Makkah, and is it permissible for him to return home and then perform the farewell circumambulation before the end of the month of Hajj?

Firstly: The Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Qudum) is a Sunnah for those arriving from outside Mecca. It is a salutation to the House (Kaaba). This is the view of the Hanafis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis. The Malikis differed, holding it to be obligatory.

Secondly: The Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada') is obligatory for anyone intending to depart Mecca after completing the rituals. Scholars differed in determining upon whom it is obligatory, and the most preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory upon those whose homes are outside the Sacred Precinct (Haram).

Thirdly: People undertaking the rituals are of two categories: those whose homes are connected to Mecca or within the boundaries of the Haram, and for them, there is no Farewell Tawaf. And those whose homes are outside the Haram, upon them is the Farewell Tawaf, and they are not permitted to depart before performing it.
