Is it permissible to sell Zakat al-Fitr to cover household expenses and buy clothes for the children?

If you have received zakat al-fitr and you are one of its rightful recipients, it has become your property, and you are permitted to dispose of it in all permissible ways, including selling it. The scholars of the Permanent Committee have stated that whoever rightfully receives zakat is permitted to sell it after taking possession of it, because it then becomes a part of his possessions.
