How can one be certain of their faith and that they are not a hypocrite, especially since Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, feared hypocrisy for himself? And how does one know that they are among the Awliya' (friends) of Allah, and what does that mean? And how can one be sure that Allah loves them?
A person knows they are a believer by fulfilling the pillars of faith, performing acts of obedience, and avoiding sins. Fear of hypocrisy is a good sign. The friends of Allah Almighty are those who devote themselves to Him through obedience, and whom He honors with miracles, and they are those "who believed and were ever conscious of God." Among the signs of Allah Almighty's love for His servant are His granting them success in increasing good deeds and acts of obedience, repentance, protecting their limbs from sins, placing acceptance for them on earth, and making believers love them.
