Is it permissible for the Imam to take a wage for leading the Tarawih prayer, and is it permissible to collect money for that in the mosque while awaiting the prayer?

It is not permissible to take a wage for leading prayers (Imamah), unless the Imam is an employee of the ruler and is given sustenance from public funds. However, if someone gives him something without him asking, there is no harm in him taking it. Asking (for money) in the mosque is disliked (makrooh), and its dislike and ugliness increase if it comes from the Imam for himself; because he is a role model and is supposed to forbid evil. The Imam must be characterized by piety, chastity, and patience, and he must keep the mosque free from people asking for money in exchange for leading the Tarawih prayers. If he is given a gift willingly, there is no harm in taking it, and it is better for this to happen outside the mosque.
