Is it permissible to participate in a compulsory 20-day university camp within the country, where young men and women are separated for sleeping arrangements but brought together for work and lectures?

The mixing of men and women in the workplace or lectures is forbidden if it is without segregation, or with women displaying their adornments (tabarruj) or beautifying themselves. However, if men are separated from women, and women are veiled, modest, not perfumed, and not wearing adornment clothing, for a legitimate purpose, then there is no harm. But this scenario is rare. The proofs for the prohibition of ostentatious mixing (ikhtilat mutabarrij) are many, including:

- Allah's prohibition of displaying adornments (tabarruj): "And do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former [times of] ignorance." [Al-Ahzab: 33].

- His prohibition of showing adornment to non-mahram men: "And let them not expose their adornment except to their husbands or their fathers or their husbands' fathers..." [An-Nur: 31].

- The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hadith: "Any woman who perfumes herself and passes by a group of people so that they may smell her fragrance, she is an adulteress." This indicates the prohibition of mixing if women are not veiled, adorned, or perfumed.
