What is the ruling on the saying: "And God fears for you from your injustice to yourself, so He disciplines you with tribulation"?

The apparent meaning of the phrase "Allah fears for you" is that Allah sends down trials to protect the servant from the injustice of their soul and its sins, and this is true; for trials purify souls from sins and defects, as established in the hadith: "Calamity continues to afflict the believing man and woman in their self, children, and wealth, until they meet Allah with no sin upon them." Ibn al-Qayyim also affirmed that Allah treats His servants with tribulations and trials to purify and refine them.

However, attributing fear to Allah Almighty in the phrase "Allah fears for you" is incorrect, because what is attributed to Allah in terms of attributes and actions is tawqifi, meaning one must be restricted to what is mentioned in the religious texts, without using metaphorical expressions or vague phrases that could lead to confusion or go beyond the bounds of reverence for Allah.

In conclusion: The general meaning of this phrase, which is that one of Allah's wisdoms in trials is the purification of souls, is religiously sound. However, expressing it as "Allah fears for you" is objectionable, and it should be expressed with sound terminology far from ambiguity.
