Is it true that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, granted a waqf (endowment) to Banu Tamim in Hebron and wrote a contract for them, witnessed by Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, and that they are still holding onto it, even though Palestine was not under Muslim rule at that time?

It has been reported in several narrations that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, granted Tamim al-Dari, may Allah be pleased with him, "Bait Habroun" (now Hebron) as an iqta'. Tamim al-Dari had come to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and asked him for an iqta' of Hebron. So, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote him a document explicitly granting him and his companions Bait Ainun, Hebron, al-Martoum, and Bait Ibrahim.

When Palestine was conquered during the reign of Omar, he fulfilled the Prophet's promise, and Tamim endowed it for his descendants and for specific charitable purposes. This was the first endowment (waqf) in Islam in the land of Palestine. Among the effects of this endowment is a permanent guesthouse in Hebron that offers lentil soup with oil to every pilgrim or visitor, and his descendants still preserve the original document.
