What is the reason for the cursing of the Zaqqum tree in the Qur’an, given that it is mentioned in the verse: "And We made not the vision which We showed you but a trial for the people, and [also] the cursed tree in the Qur’an. We frighten them, but it adds to them nothing but great transgression"?

The exegetes discussed the meaning of describing the Zaqqum tree as "accursed" based on several interpretations: Some said it is accursed in the Qur’an due to its eaters, or because it is described as being at the bottom of Hell, which is the farthest place from mercy. Others said it is detested and harmful, for Arabs say "accursed" of any food that is detested or harmful. It was also said that "accursed" means condemned in the Qur’an, due to its evil characteristics mentioned therein, such as the Almighty’s saying: "food of the sinful" and "its shoots are like the heads of devils" and "like molten copper, it boils in the bellies." Another interpretation is that "accursed" means it was placed in a location of curse, i.e., banishment from mercy, because it was created in the place of torment.
