What is the ruling on reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas and the Two Mu'awwidhat (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) collectively and aloud after the obligatory prayers in mourning gatherings and during days of condolence?
If an act is an innovation and was not practiced by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor by his Companions, and acts of worship are based on divine revelation (Tawqeef), then it is obligatory to advise the doer of such an act and clarify that he is an innovator and that his act does not draw him closer to Allah. It should also be explained that following the Sunnah is obligatory, and that if there had been any good in such an act, the Prophet and his Companions would have preceded us in it. This clarification should be done gently and kindly, and by seeking help from scholarly fatwas. If he responds, then all praise is due to Allah; otherwise, you have fulfilled your duty.
