The answer

There is no zakat on gold prepared for personal use and adornment according to the majority of scholars. However, it is more prudent to pay its zakat to avoid disagreement. If the gold is for savings or trade, zakat is obligatory on it upon the completion of a full Hijri year, and its amount is a quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) if it reaches the nisab (85 grams of pure gold). It is permissible to pay the value of the obligatory zakat.
