Is it permissible for a Muslim to be content with working only enough to meet his needs, so that he may spend the rest of his time in worship, even though Islam has encouraged work, and it might be better to seek work that yields abundant wealth for charity?

A Muslim who is able to earn a living should strive to earn enough to make himself self-sufficient and to provide for those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him. If he achieves this, then it is better for him to spend the rest of his time in the worship of Allah, the Exalted. Absolute worship has no specific time, and performing night prayers is better than praying during the day, though this does not mean that voluntary acts of worship during the day are without reward. Therefore, he should begin by fulfilling his obligations, whether to Allah or to His creation, then spend the rest of his time in recommended acts, and there is no harm in engaging in some permissible activities for recreation.
