How sound is the saying that man has no value to God, no matter how great his obedience, and does this contradict God's attributes of loving His servants, preserving them, and granting them victory?

The Muslim should fear Allah and think well of Him, hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment, while maintaining sincerity and relying on Allah’s grace, not on his own deeds, and accusing himself of shortcomings. It has been reported that whoever wishes to know his standing with Allah should look at how Allah's standing is in his heart, for Allah places the servant where he places Allah in himself. One should combine fear and hope: fear should prevail in health to increase good deeds, and hope should prevail in incapacity or near death. Thinking ill of oneself is essential for self-improvement, for thinking well of oneself prevents self-scrutiny and conceals faults. This does not contradict Allah’s love for those who obey Him, for self-improvement and fear of not being accepted are means to salvation. And it is incorrect to assert that the obedient servant has no standing with Allah.
