How can one truly put their trust in Allah while feeling deficient and unworthy of Allah's special companionship, and how can one avoid self-praise when feeling worthy, and how does a Muslim reconcile observing their shortcomings with their trust in Allah for the facilitation and fulfillment of their objectives?

There is no contradiction between reliance on God and trust in Him, and a servant's feeling of shortcomings. Complete faith leads to reliance on God and trust in His names and attributes. A servant's knowledge that God is more merciful to him than his own mother, that He is Rich and Praiseworthy, knowledgeable of his interests, and capable of bringing them to him, makes him turn to his Lord with his heart, trusting in Him. Ibn al-Qayyim states that reliance stems from the servant's knowledge of God's sufficiency and His good choice for him, and his trust and contentment with what God does. Indeed, a servant's need for God, his feeling of humility and brokenness, and his realization that he possesses nothing for himself, are among the greatest causes for God's sufficiency for him. For the servant proceeds towards God, navigating between witnessing divine favor and contemplating the defects of the self and actions. And the closest door through which a servant can enter upon God is bankruptcy, meaning his feeling of complete destitution and absolute necessity for his Lord.
