The act of writing an explicit divorce (talaq sareeh) is considered by some scholars to be equivalent to uttering it, while others consider it to be like an implicit divorce (kinayah). If a man writes an explicit divorce and intends it as such, it takes effect according to the most preponderant view within the madhhab. Indeed, many scholars hold that it takes effect even without an intention.

Therefore, if the husband wrote two messages intending divorce, two divorces have occurred. Consequently, the wife is irrevocably divorced from him (baynunah kubra), and he cannot remarry her unless she marries another man out of genuine desire, and that man divorces her after consummation or dies, and her waiting period (iddah) expires.

The majority of scholars consider consecutive divorces to take effect, whether they occur in one sitting or before a reconciliation (raj'ah). This is the fatwa (legal opinion) given. However, some scholars, such as Ibn Taymiyyah, do not consider consecutive divorces to take effect without a new marriage contract or reconciliation.
