What is the ruling on a political system based on the Western democratic project, given the disagreement among contemporary scholars regarding it?
Democracy has two aspects: The first is approved by Islam, which is granting the nation the right to choose its rulers and hold them accountable. This includes electing people of knowledge and justice. As for the second aspect, which Islam rejects, it is granting the nation – represented by parliament – the right to absolute legislation, because absolute legislation belongs to Allah alone, as He says: "Say, 'Have you considered what Allah has sent down to you of provision, and you have made some of it unlawful and some lawful?' Say, 'Has Allah permitted you, or do you invent a lie against Allah?'" (Yunus: 59). Democracy has gone to extremes in this aspect, disregarding the divine aspect, and has not made revelation a reference point, and has given the people the right to abolish constants.
