What is the interpretation of the verse: "And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance," and what was the occasion for its revelation and concerning whom was it revealed?

The verse included etiquettes that Allah commanded the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to observe, and the women of his nation to follow suit. This verse came after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave his wives a choice. When they chose him, he disciplined them with these noble etiquettes:

1. Staying in homes: Meaning, keep to your homes; do not leave except for a necessity. It is permissible to go out for prayer in the mosque, on condition of wearing the hijab and not using perfume.

2. Not displaying adornment: Meaning, do not display your adornment as was done in the first Jahiliyyah, such as walking among men, walking with a seductive sway, or not tightening the head covering to conceal necklaces, earrings, and the neck.
