What is the meaning of the Marfu’ Hadith and the Mawquf Hadith, and are they acted upon?

Marfu‘ (Elevated/Attributed): Everything attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whether it is a saying, an action, or an approval, regardless of whether the chain of narration (sanad) is authentic or not, or whether it is connected or disconnected. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi stipulates that the elevation must be from a Companion. Some hadith scholars consider a marfu‘ to be that whose chain of narration is connected. A marfu‘ is acceptable if it meets the conditions of authenticity (sahih) or goodness (hasan).

Mawquf (Stopped/Attributed to a Companion): The saying and action of a Companion. If it is attributed to a specific person, then it is the statement of that individual. The mawquf attributed to a Companion is of two types: 1. That in which personal opinion (ra’y) has a role: It is not considered a proof unless other Companions agreed with it. 2. That in which personal opinion has no role: It carries the ruling of a marfu‘ narration attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, unless it is known that the Companion used to take from the People of the Book.
