What should you do about I'tikaf after your menstrual period surprised you on the twenty-seventh day of the Last Ten Days, and after you learned that your continuation of I'tikaf in your room is not valid?
Scholars have agreed that a man's i'tikaf (seclusion in a mosque for worship) is only valid in a mosque. The majority of scholars hold that women are like men in this regard, and their i'tikaf is not valid in the prayer area of their home. I'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan is a desirable Sunnah for both men and women, provided that mischief is avoided, there is a designated place for women, the i'tikaf does not hinder her obligatory duties, and it is with the husband's permission. The basic principle is that i'tikaf is a Sunnah and not obligatory, unless it is made obligatory by a vow. If it is a vow, then it must be fulfilled. If a woman performs i'tikaf in the mosque and then menstruates, she must leave the mosque by agreement of the scholars. Her past i'tikaf is not invalidated by menstruation according to the majority of scholars. She then returns to her home, and if she becomes ritually pure and her i'tikaf was obligatory due to a vow, she must return to the mosque to complete her i'tikaf, building upon what she has already observed and making up for what she missed, and there is no expiation upon her. However, if the i'tikaf was a Sunnah, she is not obliged to return to the mosque or make up for this i'tikaf.
