The fundamental principle concerning oaths is the intention of the swearer. If, by his oath, he intended what the wording could bear, then his oath is directed towards that intention, whether it conforms to the literal wording or contradicts it. If he had no specific intention, then reference is made to the reason for the oath. If the husband, by his oath, intended to prevent his wife from joining all groups similar to the two groups he specified, or if the reason for the oath necessitated this generalization, then if the wife joins any group covered by the reason for the prohibition, the husband breaks his oath. The husband should present the matter to scholars so that they can ascertain his intention and issue a fatwa accordingly.
